Leadwork in Kent

Flashings, valleys, soakers and box gutters, done in lead the traditional way.

Leadwork in Kent

Lead is where roofs most often leak, and where bad work shows fastest. A flashing that's stuck on with mastic instead of chased into the wall will fail. A valley laid in pieces too large will split. Done properly, leadwork outlasts the tiles around it.

We fit lead the traditional way: correct codes for each position, pieces sized so the metal can move, edges welted, flashings chased into the mortar joint and pointed. It's slower than the shortcut, which is exactly why it lasts.

Kent's older housing stock is full of lead: chimney flashings and aprons, valley gutters between roofs, soakers along abutments, dormer cheeks and box gutters behind parapets. Much of what we replace was fitted wrong or has simply reached the end of its life.

Local knowledge

Leadwork we carry out

01

Chimney flashings and aprons

The joint between stack and roof is the most common leak point on any house. New lead, chased in and pointed, is the lasting fix.

02

Lead valleys

Where two roofs meet, the valley carries the most water. We re-lay valleys in correctly sized lead with proper overlaps.

03

Box gutters and dormers

Hidden gutters behind parapets and dormer cheeks need careful forming. We boss and weld by hand to fit.

From the trade

Common questions

Why does my flashing keep leaking after repairs?

Usually because it was sealed on top rather than chased into the wall. Sealant fails; properly chased lead doesn't.

How long does new leadwork last?

Correctly fitted lead lasts for many decades. It often outlives the roof covering around it.

Can you match leadwork on a listed building?

Yes. Traditional leadwork is usually what's expected on older and listed buildings, and it's how we work anyway.
