About this work

A chimney stack stands proud of the roof taking wind and rain from every direction, and its junction with the roof relies on lead flashings that eventually work loose or split. Add mortar that has weathered back and flaunching that has cracked, and water gets in, often showing up as damp on a chimney breast two floors down.

Most chimneys can be repaired rather than rebuilt: repointed, re-flaunched, new pots fitted and the lead renewed.

Our approach

How we go about it.

  1. 01

    Inspect the whole stack

Brickwork, joints, flaunching, pots and lead, from the roof, not the ground.

  2. 02

    Repoint properly

Joints raked out to a good depth and repointed in a mortar that suits the brick, lime on older stacks.

  3. 03

    Renew the lead

Back gutters, soakers, step and apron flashings replaced in new lead where they've failed.

  4. 04

    Cap or vent as needed

Unused flues capped and ventilated to stop rain getting in while allowing the stack to breathe.

From the trade

Questions we're often asked

Do I need scaffolding for chimney work?

Usually, yes, for safety and to do the job properly. We include it in the quote.

My chimney isn't used, should I remove it?

Not necessarily. A capped and repointed stack is often the simplest option and keeps the character of the house. We'll discuss both.

Can you repair the chimney and the roof around it at the same time?

Yes, and it's usually the most efficient way, as the scaffold is already there.
