Chimneys & Leadwork
Where most roof problems actually start.
Ask any experienced roofer where leaks begin and they'll point to the same places: chimneys, flashings, valleys and abutments. The junctions. We've spent four decades getting those details right, in brick and in lead.

From the archive
Chimneys, from the earliest pages of the archive.
The original print here records the replacement of two deteriorating stacks on a detached house, scaffold, take-down, rebuild and new pots. The same job, done the same way, decades on.
See these projects in the archiveThe junctions
Tiles rarely leak. Details do.
A roof is a set of slopes that shed water, and a set of junctions where those slopes meet something else: a chimney, a wall, another slope, a dormer. The slopes are simple. The junctions are where the skill is.
Lead is the traditional answer and still the best one, but only when it's the right thickness, cut to the right lengths, fixed so it can move with the weather, and dressed by someone who's done it a few thousand times.
Chimneys add brickwork to the equation: mortar that weathers back, flaunching that cracks, pots that lean. We deal with the brick and the lead together, which is why the stack and the roof around it stay dry.
