About this work

Mortar joints are meant to weather and eventually need renewing, that's how brickwork is supposed to work. Repointing done well restores the wall and protects the brick. Repointing done badly, particularly hard cement on soft old brick, traps moisture and causes the brick faces to blow.

We repoint chimneys, garden and boundary walls, and house elevations, using lime mortar on older brickwork and appropriate sand-cement mixes on more modern work.

Our approach

How we go about it.

  1. 01

    Rake out properly

Joints are raked to an adequate depth, not just skimmed, so the new mortar has something to hold.

  2. 02

    Match the mortar

Colour, texture and joint profile matched to the original where appropriate, in lime or cement as the brick requires.

  3. 03

    Point and finish

Joints filled, finished and brushed at the right stage so the result is consistent across the wall.

  4. 04

    Protect the work

Fresh lime work is protected from rain and frost while it cures.

Why experience matters

We've been pointing chimneys as part of roofing work for over forty years, and walls for almost as long. Knowing which mortar an old Wealden brick needs is second nature.

Repointing across Tenterden, Biddenden, Rolvenden, Cranbrook, Hawkhurst and the surrounding villages.

From the trade

Questions we're often asked

Should I use lime mortar?

On brickwork built before roughly 1920, almost certainly. On more modern brickwork a sand-cement mix is usually appropriate. We'll advise.

Can you repoint just one elevation?

Yes. Weather-facing elevations often need it long before sheltered ones.
