About this work
Kent peg tiles are the small, hand-made clay tiles hung on oak or wooden pegs that you see on the oldest houses in Tenterden, Biddenden, Smarden and the villages between. Their slight irregularity is what gives Wealden roofs their character, and it's also what makes them demanding to work with.
We re-lay, repair and extend peg tile roofs, salvaging existing tiles wherever possible and making up shortfalls with reclaimed tiles of the right size and colour.
Our approach
How we go about it.
01
Salvage first
Existing peg tiles are carefully stripped, cleaned and sorted. A surprising proportion can usually be reused.
02
Source to match
Shortfalls are made up with reclaimed tiles matched for size, camber and colour, or new hand-made tiles where appropriate.
03
Hang and fix properly
Tiles are hung on new battens with pegs or nails as the situation requires, at the correct gauge for the tile size.
04
Respect the building
Ridges, hips, valleys and eaves are finished in the traditional way. On listed buildings we work with the conservation officer's requirements.

Why experience matters
There's no substitute for having handled thousands of these tiles. Knowing how they sit, how they weather, and how the original roofers dealt with awkward junctions is what we bring to a peg tile roof.
Peg tile work across Tenterden, Biddenden, Smarden, Rolvenden, Benenden, Sissinghurst and the wider Weald.
From the trade
Questions we're often asked
Do you work on listed buildings?
Yes. Peg tile roofs are very often on listed properties. We're used to working to conservation requirements and can help with the consent process.
Are reclaimed tiles as good as new?
Good reclaimed peg tiles have already proven themselves over a century or more. Provided they're sound, and we check each one, they're often the best choice.
