Chimney rebuilding in Kent

When a stack is past repointing, we take it down and rebuild it to match the house.

Chimney rebuilding in Kent

Some chimneys reach the point where repointing is throwing good money after bad: the brickwork is spalling, the stack leans, or cracks run through the courses. The safe answer is a rebuild, above the roof line or from the ground up.

We record the stack before we take it down: the brick, the bond, the corbelling, the pot arrangement. Then we rebuild it in brick chosen to match, with new flaunching, pots or caps, and new leadwork where it meets the roof. Rebuilding chimneys is nothing new to us; the company archive holds project sheets for exactly this work decades ago.

Kent's period houses carry large, often decorative stacks: tall Victorian chimneys, shared stacks on terraces, big central stacks on Wealden houses. Many are exposed to decades of weather with soft brick and eroded mortar, and rebuilt stacks need to match conservation area expectations.

Local knowledge

When a chimney needs rebuilding

01

Leaning stacks

A visible lean means the structure is moving. It needs scaffolding and a proper look, soon.

02

Spalling brickwork

Faces blowing off the bricks mean water is inside and freezing. Repointing won't save brick that's already gone.

03

Failed flaunching and pots

Cracked flaunching lets water straight into the stack. Caught early it's a repair; left, it becomes a rebuild.

Common questions

Does my chimney need rebuilding or repointing?

If the bricks are sound, repointing is enough. If they're spalling, cracked through or the stack leans, rebuilding is the honest answer. We'll tell you which.

Will the rebuilt stack match the house?

Yes. We record the existing brickwork and source brick to match, including any corbelling or detail.

Do you sort the flashing at the same time?

Always. New leadwork where the stack meets the roof is part of the job.
